Do hidden photos take up iPhone storage?
Do hidden photos take up iPhone storage?
Yes: Apple says hidden photos stay in your library and names no storage exception for them, so hiding a photo frees no space on your iPhone. To get the space back you have to delete it, and it then keeps using iPhone storage in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days.
Short answer
Hiding only changes where a photo shows up, so treat a hidden photo as taking the same space it took before. Apple doesn't show a size for the Hidden album anywhere. If you want the room back, you can delete the photos or, with iCloud Photos on, use Optimize Storage. Hiding itself won't help.
What Apple says, and what follows from it
Apple's support pages don't answer this question directly. Here's what they do say:
- Hidden items stay in your library.
- Hiding keeps them stored in iCloud Photos, out of the library view.
- Photos kept in iCloud Photos use both iCloud storage and device storage.
Put those together and a hidden photo takes up space like any other. That's our reading, not a sentence Apple has published, but Apple names no exception for Hidden. In our iOS 27 simulator test, a hidden photo and a hidden video sat in the same photo folder as everything else, at full size. A simulator isn't an iPhone, but it fits what Apple says. Hidden videos follow the same rule, and they're usually the biggest files.
Apple doesn't show the Hidden album's size
The two screens Apple points to are general ones:
- On your iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- In iCloud: Settings > your name > iCloud > Storage.
Apple doesn't describe either one separating out hidden photos, so you can't read the album's size from them.
Delete hidden photos to free the space
- Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden.
- Tap View Album and open it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Open a photo and delete it, or tap Select to pick several.
- To free the space now, go to Collections, Recently Deleted, View Album, open it, then tap Select, More and Delete All.
Step 4 clears everything in Recently Deleted, not only what you came to delete, so look through it first.
A few things to know before you start:
- The 30 days. Items in Recently Deleted keep using iPhone storage but don't count toward iCloud storage, as our guide to Recently Deleted and storage explains.
- Your other devices. With iCloud Photos, the photo also leaves iCloud and your other devices after those 30 days.
- A full iCloud plan. Apple says that over your iCloud limit, deletions skip Recently Deleted and can't be recovered there.
- Your own copy. Apple says iCloud Photos isn't a second copy and to keep backups. Save anything you want to keep before you delete it.
If the number doesn't move afterward, see why iPhone storage can stay full after deleting photos.
Optimize Storage can reduce what's on the iPhone
With iCloud Photos on, Optimize Storage lets your iPhone hold optimized copies that aren't at original resolution. Apple says it's on by default with iCloud Photos, and it doesn't say whether it treats hidden photos differently.
- iOS 27: Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos > iPhone Storage > Optimize Storage.
- iOS 26 or earlier: the same path, without the iPhone Storage step.
If it's on and your iPhone is still full, here's why Optimize may not be freeing space.
Where hiding stops helping with storage
- It frees nothing. The photo stays in your library and in iCloud Photos.
- It gives you no figure. You can't tell what the album costs you.
- It leaves your copies alone. Hiding applies to the item you picked. A duplicate, an edited copy or the next shot in a burst stays in your Library, using its own space.
If hidden photos turn out to be a small part of the problem, our guide to freeing up a full iPhone covers the rest.
What LuminaClean does here
LuminaClean is a photo cleaner, and it doesn't hide photos. It works on the storage side: the duplicate copies and near-identical shots using space in your Library. It groups duplicates and similar photos on your iPhone, with no account and no upload, and you swipe to keep or delete. Nothing goes without your swipe, and every delete lands in Recently Deleted first. You get 65 free deletes to start, then 30 more every day.
Less to keep private.
LuminaClean finds duplicates, blurry shots and screenshots on your iPhone, and deletes only what you swipe away. Free to start, no account.
Anything you delete goes to Recently Deleted first, so you have 30 days to change your mind.

Frequently asked questions
How can I see how much storage my Hidden album uses?
You can't with Apple's tools. iPhone Storage and iCloud Storage are general views, and Apple doesn't describe a figure for the Hidden album on either one.
Do hidden photos count toward my iCloud storage?
Apple says hidden photos stay stored in iCloud Photos, and that photos kept there use iCloud storage. It doesn't name Hidden in that sentence, so our reading is yes.
If I unhide my photos, will my iPhone use more storage?
Apple doesn't describe any change. Hidden items never left your library, so our reading is that unhiding shouldn't move the number.
Do photos I delete from the Hidden album free up space right away?
Not right away. A deleted photo keeps using iPhone storage in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days, or until you empty that album. Apple says those items don't count toward iCloud storage in the meantime.
Do hidden videos take up storage too?
Yes. Apple's pages cover photos and videos together, so a hidden video stays in your library the same way. Videos are usually the largest files, so start there if you're deleting for space.
