How do I hide photos on iPhone so nobody finds them?
How do I hide photos on iPhone so nobody finds them?
Press and hold the photo in the Photos app, tap Hide and confirm, and it moves to the Hidden album, which has been locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode by default since iOS 16. To remove the album from view as well, turn off Show Hidden Album in Settings > Apps > Photos (on iOS 27 it's Hidden Album, under Albums), but anyone who knows your passcode can still get to those photos.
Short answer
Hide the photo, keep the album's lock on, and turn off Show Hidden Album. The photo then disappears from your Library, your other albums and the Photos widget, and the album it moved to disappears too. It costs nothing and needs no app. What it can't do is give you a second password: the lock opens with the same passcode that opens your iPhone, so it stops someone swiping through your phone, not someone who knows your code.
Hide one photo or video
- Open Photos.
- Press and hold the photo or video.
- Tap Hide, then Hide Photo to confirm.
If the photo is already open on screen, tap More (the three dots), then Hide. Both routes do the same thing. The photo leaves your Library, your other albums and the Photos widget, and goes to the Hidden album.
Hide several at once
- In your Library or an album, tap Select.
- Tap each photo you want to hide.
- Tap More, then Hide, and confirm.
Make the Hidden album disappear too
By default, an album called Hidden sits in plain sight under Utilities, with a lock on it. Anyone browsing your phone can see that it exists. To take it out of view:
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then Photos. On iOS 27, also tap Albums.
- Turn off Show Hidden Album (on iOS 27 it reads Hidden Album).
- On the same screen, leave Use Face ID on (it says Use Touch ID or Use Passcode on some iPhones). Turning it off unlocks both Hidden and Recently Deleted.
Your photos stay where they are. When you want them back, turn the setting on again and follow our guide to where the Hidden album lives.
Three places a hidden photo can still turn up
- Your other copies. Hiding applies to the item you picked. A duplicate, an edited copy or the next shot in a burst stays in your Library, and a copy you sent in a chat stays in that chat.
- Your other devices. With iCloud Photos, a photo hidden on your iPhone is hidden on your iPad and Mac as well, and its Hidden album is there too. If other people use those devices, read how to keep private photos off a family iPad or shared Mac.
- A Shared Library. Apple says that hiding a photo in an iCloud Shared Photo Library moves it to the Hidden album for everyone in that library, and they can view or unhide it. Keep private photos in your personal library.
Where Apple's Hidden album stops
- Your passcode opens it. Face ID is only the quick route. Anyone who knows your passcode can get in, as our guide to opening Hidden without Face ID explains.
- There's no separate password. Photos can't set one. If you need a code of its own, here's what you can do instead.
- Apple doesn't describe extra encryption for it. Apple's Platform Security guide (August 2026) never mentions the Hidden album, so think of it as a lock on an album, not a second layer of protection on top of what your iPhone already has.
- Whole albums can't be hidden. Only the photos inside them can, which leaves an album you have to deal with.
For most people, that's fine: the goal is that someone scrolling through your camera roll to find a vacation photo doesn't land on the wrong one, and the Hidden album handles that well. If you're worried about someone who controls your phone or knows your code, hiding photos isn't the right tool, and Apple's Personal Safety guide is a better place to start.
What LuminaClean does here
LuminaClean is a photo cleaner, and it doesn't hide photos. It helps with the leftovers: the near-identical shots and duplicate copies still sitting in your Library after you hid the one you cared about. It groups duplicates and similar photos on your iPhone, with no account and no upload, and you swipe to keep or delete. Nothing goes without your swipe, and every delete lands in Recently Deleted first. You get 65 free deletes to start, then 30 more every day.
Less to keep private.
LuminaClean finds duplicates, blurry shots and screenshots on your iPhone, and deletes only what you swipe away. Free to start, no account.
Anything you delete goes to Recently Deleted first, so you have 30 days to change your mind.
On a computer? LuminaClean is an iPhone app. Scan this with your iPhone camera to open it in the App Store.

Frequently asked questions
Can someone find my hidden photos on iPhone?
Only by getting past the lock. The Hidden album opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, so a person who knows your passcode can open it, and a person using your phone without it can't. Turning off Show Hidden Album removes the album from view, but the photos are still there for anyone who turns it back on.
How do I unhide photos on iPhone?
Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden, then tap View Album and unlock it. Press and hold the photo and tap Unhide. It goes back to your Library and to any album it was in.
Does hiding a photo delete it or remove it from iCloud?
No. Apple says hidden photos stay in your library, and with iCloud Photos they stay stored in iCloud and are hidden on your other devices too. Hiding changes where a photo shows up, not whether it exists.
Can I hide photos on iPhone without downloading an app?
Yes. Hiding is built into the Photos app and has been there for years. You only need another app if you want a password that's different from your iPhone passcode, and even then Apple's Notes app can do that for images.
If I have two copies of a photo and hide one, is the other hidden too?
No. Hiding applies to the item you selected, so a duplicate, an edited copy or a similar shot from the same moment stays in your Library. Check for copies before you consider a photo hidden.
