Do hidden photos sync to iCloud and my other devices?

Yes, with iCloud Photos on, a hidden photo stays stored in iCloud and is hidden on your iPad and Mac as well. It's end-to-end encrypted only if you've turned on Advanced Data Protection, and even then Apple lists the hidden flag itself as staying under standard protection.

Short answer

Hiding changes where a photo shows up, not where it's stored. Every device using iCloud Photos gets the photo and its hidden status, and iCloud.com has a Hidden view too. To keep one device out, you turn off syncing for that whole device, which stops all your photos there, not only the hidden ones. Apple doesn't describe any extra encryption for Hidden.

What syncs when iCloud Photos is on

Hiding carries across every device that uses iCloud Photos. Apple's iCloud guide says a hidden photo stays stored in iCloud Photos and only leaves the library view.

Your iPad and Mac. Hide a photo on your iPhone and it's hidden on those too.
iCloud.com. Apple's route is Hidden, then Show Hidden Photos. Its page describes no Face ID step, so your Apple Account password matters here.
Show Hidden Album. Apple doesn't say whether this setting syncs, and the defaults differ: on for iPhone and iPad, off on Mac. Check it on each device.

Stop one device from syncing

The switch Apple documents works on a whole device, not on hidden photos alone.

On that device, open Settings and tap your name.
Tap iCloud, then Photos.
Deselect Sync this iPhone (on an iPad, Sync this iPad).
Choose Download Photos & Videos or Remove from iPhone.

On a Mac, it's Sync this Mac in System Settings, under your name, iCloud and Photos.

Here's what it costs. New photos, edits and deletions stop syncing for that device, across your whole library. If you don't download, any optimized copies left there aren't at original resolution.

How iCloud encrypts hidden photos

The hidden flag is a label on the photo, which Apple lists as metadata with the favorite and deleted flags. So with Advanced Data Protection on, the photo is end-to-end encrypted, but the fact that it's marked hidden isn't. Apple's Platform Security guide (August 2026) never mentions the Hidden album.

iCloud Backup follows its own rule

With iCloud Photos on, your photos aren't part of your iCloud Backup. With it off, a backup may include them. Apple names no exception for Hidden, so assume hidden photos follow the same rule. Turning off iCloud Photos doesn't guarantee they've left iCloud.

A Shared Library hides photos for everyone

Apple's iCloud.com guide says hiding a Shared Library photo moves it to the Hidden album for all participants, and they can view or unhide it. Up to 6 people can be in a library, and all of them can view, edit and delete what's been contributed. Keep private photos in your personal library.

Where hiding stops in iCloud

It doesn't keep a photo out of iCloud. A hidden photo goes wherever your library goes.

Deleting is the way to remove one photo. It sits in Recently Deleted for 30 days, then leaves your iPhone, iCloud and your other devices.
