Not enough storage to move to your new iPhone? Fix it first

The new phone is on the desk, the old one is next to it, and setup stops on a storage message. It’s a common way for an upgrade day to stall, and it usually has a quick fix. The fix depends on which storage is short: your iCloud account, or the new iPhone itself.

New iPhones are landing now. MacRumors reports the iPhone 18 Pro started arriving on September 18, and the iPhone Duo opens for pre-orders on October 16 ahead of an October 23 launch. Everything below works for any iPhone you’re moving to.

Two ways to move, and where each runs out of space

Apple gives you two routes when you set up a new iPhone. Both start with Quick Start, the setup screen that appears when you hold the old phone near the new one.

One detail changes the maths. According to Apple, if iCloud Photos is on, your photos and videos already sync to iCloud and aren’t part of the backup. With iCloud Photos off, the photo library goes into the backup, and that can be most of its size.

Use Apple’s free temporary iCloud storage for the move

If you’ve bought a new iPhone or iPad and don’t have enough iCloud storage to back up the current one, Apple lets you make a temporary iCloud backup at no charge. You don’t need to buy an iCloud+ plan for the move. Apple’s steps, on the old phone:

1. Update the old iPhone to the latest version of iOS. Apple lists this as a requirement, along with knowing your Apple Account email or phone number and password.
2. Open Settings and tap General.
3. Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
4. Under Prepare for New iPhone, tap Get Started.
5. If iCloud Backup is off, tap Turn On Backup to Transfer. If you don’t have enough storage, tap Continue when it offers the extra space.
6. Wait for the backup to finish. On the new phone, choose to restore from that iCloud backup during setup.

The timing rules are strict, so note them:

• 21 days to restore. Apple gives you 21 days to restore the temporary backup to the new device.
• 21 more if the phone is late. If the new device doesn’t arrive in time, open Settings on the old phone and tap Keep My Backup Longer for another 21 days. That’s useful if you back up early for a pre-order.
• 7 days after restoring. Once you’ve restored, the temporary backup stays available for 7 days before Apple deletes it. To keep backing up to iCloud after that, you need an iCloud+ plan with enough room.

Apple frames the offer around iCloud Backup. It won’t make room for an iCloud Photos library that has outgrown your plan, and it won’t help if the new phone is the thing that’s too small.

When the new iPhone is smaller than your library

This one catches people who pick a lower capacity to save money, or who had a 512 GB or 1 TB phone and are moving to a base model. MacRumors lists both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo as starting at 256 GB.

Apple’s advice for moving to a lower-capacity device starts with a check. On the old phone, go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage and look at how much is used. If everything fits on the new phone, Apple says you can transfer without removing anything. If it doesn’t, you need to optimize or remove content first. Leave some headroom too, since a phone that arrives already full has no room for updates or new photos.

You have three ways to shrink the photo side:

• Move originals off the phone. With iCloud Photos on and Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, Apple keeps space-saving versions on the phone and the full-resolution files in iCloud. This needs an iCloud plan big enough for the whole library.
• Import to a computer. Apple’s lower-capacity guide suggests importing photos and videos to a computer, then deleting them from the phone.
• Delete what you don’t need. Many libraries carry gigabytes of copies, rejects and clutter. This is the part you can do today, on the phone, for free.

What to trim on the old phone before you transfer

Do this before you start Quick Start or the temporary backup. Anything you remove first is data you don’t have to back up, upload, restore or fit on the new phone. Work from the biggest wins down.

Large videos

Video is where the gigabytes are. A single minute of 4K runs to several hundred megabytes, and a few long clips, screen recordings or slow-motion files can outweigh thousands of photos. Start with the biggest files. If a clip matters but not in full quality, compressing it keeps the clip and takes less space.

Duplicates

Saved images from chats, edited copies and repeated imports pile up. The Photos app has a built-in Duplicates view that finds exact copies and lets you merge them. It’s built for exact copies, so similar shots are left alone. More in our guide to deleting duplicate photos on iPhone.

Near-duplicate bursts

Ten frames of the same group shot, a burst of the dog mid-jump, three tries at the sunset. You need one or two of each. These aren’t exact copies, so Apple’s Duplicates view skips them, and they’re slow to sort by hand in a big library.

Screenshots

Recently Deleted

This step makes the others count. Deleted photos and videos sit in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and still use space until the album is emptied. Photos aren’t always the whole story. Messages attachments, app caches and downloaded media also take space on the old phone and count toward what you move.
